A Word on Relations that are “Removed”

There is often confusion as to what “removed” means when it comes to your relatives. As it says in the glossary, it refers to a relationship separated by a particular number of steps of descent, i.e. by generation. Here is an example:

My mother has a much older sister. As a result of the age gap between them, my Mom has a niece by this sister who is the same age as her. We shall call her “Bethany”. Because of Bethany’s age, she seems more like an aunt to me, but she’s not. Despite the fact that she is so much older than me, she and I are the same generation relative to our grandparents. She is my first cousin. Agewise Bethany is my mother’s peer, but she is the daughter of my mom’s sister; they are one generation removed from one another. Bethany is the same generation as me, but from an age perspective she is not my peer.

Bethany has a daughter named Roxanne who is exactly my age. Roxanne seems like my first cousin, but in fact it is her mother (Bethany) who is my first cousin. She is one generation further removed from my grandfather – her great-grandfather. Relationships are measured against those who are of the same generation, so her mother (Bethany) is my first cousin. Some might think this makes Roxanne my second cousin, but as you will see shortly, she is not. Roxanne is my first cousin once removed.

To show why I am not Roxanne’s second cousin, one only needs to look at someone who is – my son. My grandfather is the great grandfather to both Roxanne and my son. They are of the same generation. My son’s second cousin (Roxanne) is my first cousin once removed.
